A native of Terrebonne Parish, Joseph grew up surrounded by the same waterways that drive much of our region’s offshore and maritime work. Long before he set foot in a law school classroom, he understood what life on the water looks like for many of our neighbors.
Before his legal career, he served for four years as a deputy with the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Office Water Patrol Division, where he conducted search and rescue operations. That experience put him face-to-face with emergency situations and families in crisis. It also gave him a deep respect for the dangers that offshore and maritime workers face every day.
Joseph built on that foundation with formal maritime training through Sea School and earned a 100 Master Captains certification. Combined with his local roots, this background gives him real-world insight when he handles maritime and offshore injury cases for our clients along the Gulf Coast.

Joseph brings a blend of business training and legal knowledge to every case. He graduated from Nicholls State University in 2009 with a degree in Business Management. He then earned his Juris Doctorate from Southern University Law Center in 2014.
That same year, he joined the Waitz & Downer team, continuing the Waitz family’s commitment to serving South Louisiana. Since then, he has recovered millions of dollars for injured clients, reflecting the determination he brings to each matter. His peers in the local legal community have also trusted him with leadership; he is a past president of the Terrebonne Parish Bar Association.
